Website or mobile app: which does your business actually need?

Most businesses need a website first. A website is how a new customer finds you, checks whether you are real, and gets in touch, and it works on every device with nothing to install. A mobile app earns its cost only once customers come back often enough to want something faster than a browser.
What is a website actually for?
Being found and being believed. When someone hears your business name, they search it. What they find in the next ten seconds decides whether they call you. A website is the only thing that works for a stranger, because nobody installs an app for a business they have not decided to trust yet.
When does a mobile app make sense?
- Customers come back regularly, weekly rather than yearly.
- They need to do something repeatedly: order, book, track or pay.
- You need to reach them with notifications rather than email.
- The task is genuinely awkward in a browser.
If none of those describe your customers, an app will cost more, reach fewer people and get opened less than a website would. That is not a reason never to build one. It is a reason to build it second.
Why does an app cost more than a website?
Because it is more work and it does not stop. An app has to be built for two platforms, submitted to two stores and reviewed before anyone can use it. Then it has to keep being updated as those platforms change. A website goes live when you say so and does not need permission from anyone.
The hardest part of an app is not building it. It is persuading someone to install it, and then persuading them to open it again next month.
What about doing both?
That is the right end state for many businesses, and the right order is almost always website first. The website brings in the customers. The app serves the ones who came back. Building them in that order also means the app is designed around how people really use your service, rather than around a guess.
How do I decide?
Ask how often one customer needs to do something with your business. Once or twice a year means a website. Every week means an app is worth costing. If you are unsure, Solanics will say which one the business actually needs, including when the answer is the cheaper one.
